Our Coaches

Lauren Ray graduated from Lawrence University in 2018 where she set for four years on the women's volleyball team. For the last four summers she has coached at multiple high school volleyball camps in the Fox Valley area, and now looks forward to coaching at MVP.

Volleyball is a team sport that provides real character building opportunities for all that partake. My goal is to provide teaching and guidance to all my players and assign them with responsibilities for their personal development and the development of the team.  Personal accountability of these responsibilities is what allows for the most growth of my players both on and off the court. How each girls represents themselves, her team, her club and her family, are the most important factors of a successful player. Character leads to team chemistry, which leads to a successful team both on and off the court. My style is to provide instruction to each player regarding both individual skills and team concepts that are of equal importance. Girls on my teams will always know when they are doing something properly and also when they are not.

For us, volleyball is our way of life. We truly devote our time and passion into the game, and believe that when you are this committed to something, the dedication shows.

As coaches we want to see all of our players master the things they can control, their effort, attitude and confidence, and strive to develop the skills with the goal of reaching their full potential.  We believe that is accomplished by working hard and pushing the players to expect success from themselves.  We preach playing aggressively and with confidence. Playing with confidence and eliminating fear allow players to reach new heights that they have been unable to reach before.

As coaches we want to see the girls improve their skills but most of all grow as a person. We believe that being a member of a team builds lifelong skills that translate off the court.

Lastly, we want everyone to enjoy themselves and have a great time.

From early on we are taught that making mistakes are a bad thing. My goal is to teach that making mistakes are ok as long as we learn from them. With that knowledge, combined with hard work and repetitions, the volleyball players confidence can grow.

Communication is also a very important part of a successful team. I will help them understand that talking on the court will build team energy and trust between each other and talking off the court will build strong bonds between the players. Both of these are a must in order to build good team chemistry.

Sami is currently finishing up her Kinesiology degree at UWM and is studying to become a Physical Therapist.

Back in high school, she played three years of Varsity volleyball at DSHA and played 7 years of club volleyball as an opposite hitter and setter at Penguins, Sting and Southwest. Sami was a three-sport varsity athlete at DSHA and earned a volleyball and basketball scholarship to Bethel College (NAIA) in Indiana where she earned all-conference and all-region honors her freshman and sophomore year as well as Conference Setter of the Year as a sophomore.

Sami then transferred to Bemidji State University (NCAA D2) and finished out her career as the starting setter/opposite hitter, leading the team in both assists and kills, and second in digs and hitting %.

After college I started coaching because I wanted to be able to teach girls about the game I love. I love watching girls grow more confident in their abilities on the court, all while pushing them to be the best they can be. My goal is to provide the girls with all the skills they need to be successful both on and off the court, developing their volleyball skills, but also teaching them that how they handle themselves off the court is equally as important.

Coach JJ Saugstad is completely committed to his volleyball teams, his motto being “eat, breath and sleep volleyball. His expectations are very high, he looks for 100% effort every minute a player is on the court. JJ also looks for athletes that are versatile, well rounded that have the drive to continually get better. Each player is expected to know a variety of positions and what is required for each specific role, this makes them more valuable to any team they are playing on.

JJ is not only passionate about the game; he truly understands the fundamentals and how important they are to how you perform in game play. JJ starts by focusing on breaking down the skills then progressing to the level of game play expected. Through the use of “game speed drills” players will be able to prepare for match play situations utilizing specific skills needed to win. On the court; passion, competitiveness, drive, hard work and most importantly playing as a “team” are a few key traits JJ looks for in his players. JJ strives to build team spirit so deep that the girls feel they are part of a family. He pushes his players to succeed at being the best players they can be, while increasing their love for the game of volleyball.

Her coaching philosophy is to focus on the athlete’s character. Her goal is to create well-rounded players on the court and in the classroom. She strives to enhance her players’ volleyball skills while developing their leadership skills, work ethic and self-discipline. She is excited to implement her philosophy while also hoping to learn from her players.

“Don’t aspire to be the best on the team. Aspire to be the best for the team.”

“An attempt to continually improve; a willingness to give all up for a cause; and sacrificing without expectation.” (Rudd, 2006). This definition illustrates both, the social and moral aspects of character that I look for within athletes, both on and off the court. Once a team learns to adopt this mindset and turns it into their mode of operation then you start to see what the team is made of. One of most exciting parts to me about coaching is the process of transformation, going through the trenches with your teammates, and coming out a better player and stronger person.

Ted Gollakner, Coach & Advisory Board Memeber

My philosophy is to have fun, teach some life lessons, teach the meaning of success which comes in many different ways, getting a group of young ladies to play together as a team, play to their very best, and reach their ultimate potential while having fun!

Success is not defined on the scoreboard, at the end of the match we usually ask the team "did you give everything that you have?", if yes then you were successful. What we have learned is to be consistent in our behavior which creates respect and trust in our players, leading to a quality relationship!
